What comes around goes around and that’s certainly the case for fashion. The platform sandals of the 1990’s have returned and I am totally living for it! Since I was born in the early 90’s, I never got to participate in the trends of the decade, so I’m excited to have the opportunity to now. Platform sandals in the form of chunky flip-flops and Mary-Janes were HUGE in the 90’s. The flat platform style of the 2020 Spring season has a bohemian vibe to it that’s perfect for Spring and Summer this year.

If you’re short like me, you might find certain spring and summer trends, like wide leg pants and maxi dresses, hard to wear without adding a bit of height. As much as I love my stacked heels and girly wedges, nothing compares to the comfort of flats. With flat platforms, you get all the comfort of flats, the height of heels, and none of the pain or strain on your feet!

I was dead set on getting a pair of flat platform sandals for this season, so I decided to try two popular pairs from my favorite retailers; Lulus and Steve Madden.

Lulus – Corsa White Espadrille

I’ve never ordered shoes from Lulus before, but they’re always on trend and so cute. I took advantage of the “buy 3, get 1 free” promotion a few weeks ago to try a pair of size 5 flat platform sandals. These Corsa White Espadrille Sandals had amazing reviews from other customers and looked super cute with different outfits.

The shoes arrived well packaged and we’re even cuter in person, but they were simply too big for my tiny feet. Usually I can get away with shoes that are slightly too big by adjusting the ankle strap tighter, but even on the smallest setting, the straps bunched and my feet slid around when I walked. I really wanted to love these shoes because the style was exactly what I wanted, but they definitely run true to an average size 5 shoe.

Steve Madden – Kimmie

Steve Madden’s platform sandal of the season this year is the Kimmie. The Kimmie features thick elastic straps, a cork-look footbed, and a braided outer sole that gives them that on-trend bohemian vibe. These flat platform sandals are super cute and seem to have found their way into the closet of every fashion influencer on Instagram, so by sheer exposure I couldn’t resist the urge to try a pair!

Steve Madden is one of my all time favorite shoe retailers for petite shoes. Their shoes are typically cut slightly smaller than average shoes, so I usually have great luck fitting their size 5. For reference, I’m a size 4.5 in almost every other shoe brand and my feet measure approximately 8 5/8″. Yes, I know, my feet are super tiny!

As you can see in the photo, my feet don’t quite fill the footbed and the thick elastic straps around my ankle bunch up from the extra space. I thought I could get away with them, but after stumbling over my own feet indoors, I decided not to chance it. I was bummed, but I didn’t give up the search. After reading through some reviews, I ordered another pair of sandals from Steve Madden and hoped they fit!

Steve Madden – Cici

Petite feet ladies, you are in for a treat! The Cici sandals feature a similar style to the Kimmie shoe, but they include an adjustable heel strap, a huge lifesaver for fellow petite-footed ladies, and slightly different embellishments. The overall style is relatively the same as the Kimmie and remains toe-tally on-trend (too much?) The Cici has a slightly more arched footbed than the Kimmie, but the design around the base of the shoe gives it a flat chunky look, which is exactly what I was looking for.

These Cici platform sandals are also a size 5, but they definitely fit my small feet so much better. I credit that to the slightly more arched footbed and tighter leather toe straps. When I first put them on, I could barely get my toes to peak out from the thick front strap, but after a little wiggling and proper breaking in, they fit just fine. I will say though, that these shoes definitely run small, but that was exactly why I decided to buy them. If you want more petite shoe buying tips, stay tuned and check out my post next week!

Overall, I’m super happy with my purchase and so excited to pair them with all kinds of spring outfits, that I’ll hopefully get to wear as soon as this quarantine lifts! In the meantime, I’ll be playing dress-up at home and brainstorming outfit ideas to inspire your inner fashionista!
